This is a writing and reading informational 2-week unit aligned to CCSS for 4th grade. This includes reading standards RI.4.1, RI.4.2, RI.4.3, RI.4.7, RI.4.9, RI.4.10 and writing standards W.4.2-W.4.2e.
During this project students review informational texts, informational text features, read informational texts, research a self-selected breed of dog, and write an informational essay with an attractive way to present their writing in the hallway.
This product includes detailed lessons with CCSS noted on each lesson to see the project through to the end. Additionally it includes; an informational text anchor chart, graphic organizers for main idea and comparing and contrasting, a nonfiction text feature review find, research graphic organizers, writing leads chart, transition words chart, summary ending chart, editing and revising checklists, a rubric and student examples of the final product. It also includes hallway title letters and doggie pictures for display in the hallway. As well, the doggie tri-folds are ready to print on 11x17 paper.
I have used this unit in my classroom and the students have really enjoyed this project because they have choice. They are guiding their research with their own wondering questions. They use texts and the internet to research.

This is written with 4th grade in mind but definitely could be used in 5th with some adjustments. #rd graders could use this too but the writing expectations would have to be modified for 3rd grade writers.
