In this unit, students combine creativity and imagination with formal essay writing. Students begin by creating maps of imaginary countries. These maps include landforms, bodies of water, and cities. Then, students learn about writing outlines and compile details about their country in a scaffolded outline. Students learn the components of an academic essay and write strong topic sentences, introductions, and conclusions. Finally, students put everything together in a final product that makes a wonderful display item or class book.
This unit includes:
-Complete lesson plans with Common Core standard correlations, background notes, differentiation ideas, and troubleshooting tips
-Teaching sheets to support instruction about topic sentences, introductions, conclusions, and sentence variety
-PowerPoints to guide students through the process of map creation and outlining
