Responding to Nonfiction- Aligned with CCSS- Grade 2/ Beginning 3rd

2.W.2- Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section

See writing template included as a mini lesson-

In order to cross-pollinate the curriculum with science/literacy, I decided to gather facts for my students to choose and write factual sentences in a paragraph. Now science has become more accessible, just by extracting scientific elements from our text and merging the vocabulary, definitions, and background knowledge. The facts are already listed for them to choose from. Try this with any nonfiction topic if researching is not an option; or do as I did and use this approach before researching. My student’s felt that this approach/strategy helped them understand why ‘facts’ are so important in the process. This assignment will undoubtedly prepare them for more research to come!
