This is an engaging informational passage and assessment on one of the rarest and most beautiful animals in the world, the vicuña (vicuna). Worshipped for centuries by the Incas of South America and a national symbol of Peru, these animals were almost hunted to extinction fifty years ago due to their silky and highly-prized wool, but have now made a comeback. The text is written specifically for Grade 3-5 students and can be used in a number of ways by teachers (close reading, direct instruction in class, independent practice, homework, test prep, assessment, sub work, centers, etc.). Please see the Preview for an idea of the text style and also ALL the assessment questions at the end of the reading.
