Product Description
This is a writing and reading informational 2-week unit aligned to CCSS for 4th grade. This includes reading standards RI.4.1, RI.4.2, RI.4.3, RI.4.7, RI.4.9, RI.4.10 and writing standards W.4.2-W.4.2e. During this project students learn about nonfiction texts, nonfiction text features, read nonfiction texts, research a self-selected snake, and write an informational essay with an attractive way to present their writing in the hallway.
This product includes detailed lessons to see the project through to the end, an informational text anchor chart, graphic organizers for main idea and comparing and contrasting, nonfiction text feature posters, a nonfiction text feature find, research graphic organizers, writing leads chart, details chart, transition words chart, summary ending chart, editing and revising checklists, a rubric and student examples of the final product.
I have used this unit in my classroom and the students have really enjoyed this project because they have choice. They are guiding their research with their own wonderings. Students generate their own questions that guide their research. They use texts and the internet to research.
We focused our unit around snakes but any topic could be used. Just pick the topic and use the multiple resources to make it work for you. A lot of the work has been done for you.
