This read aloud comprehension strategy building product is a super resource for 1st-3rd grade students learning to think critically about informational text through read aloud and guided practice. Using "The Pumpkin Book " by Gail Gibbons, students work on ELA Common Core State Standards by:
• Answering and asking questions about the text
• Determining main idea & details
• Locating text evidence to support their answers
• Visualizing content-related concepts
• Defining text-based tier 2 and content-related tier 3 vocabulary
• Identifying and differentiating between multiple meaning words
• Developing an awareness of parts of speech
• Writing to learn
Because the students are using authentic informational text, they are learning science and social studies related content as they practice comprehension skills. The book includes detailed information about growing pumpkins from seed to ripe pumpkin, as well as kid-friendly historical information about what makes a pumpkin unique to the American culture.
Some of the activities in this packet provide for differentiation in order to meet the needs of students at different grade levels, and or students who read and write at different levels. For instance, when locating text evidence, there is a page in which the students write the quoted sentence from the book that supports their statement & a page in which students choose between 3 multiple choice answers to support the text evidence they found. Several activities call for the teacher’s discretion as to whether the responses should be written or illustrated, and there are 2 versions of a vocabulary crossword puzzle-one with and one without a word box.
