This project is a perfect assessment for the end of a unit on Informational Text. The project covers author's purpose, text structure, and main idea. It is a companion piece to my Lesson Plan Packs on these concepts.
For the project, students read multiple informational text passages and select one passage of each text structure to analyze (compare and contrast, cause and effect, logical order, and chronological order). For each passage, the students locate the main idea, label the author's purpose, and create a graphic organizer complete with details from the text. Differentiation by product occurs by the selection of passages and the method of display for each student. The students also write a descriptive essay for the project, thus incorporating writing skills.
The project comes with a full lesson plan with Common Core Standards, detailed procedures, and a materials list. Also included are student directions, checklists and grade sheets, and a list of possible resources for locating informational text passages.
