This is a tool for Spanish-speaking English Language Learners to learn about main ideas, supporting details, and text features of informational (non-fiction) texts. It includes spaces for writing main ideas and supporting details, as well as steps for finding them. It also includes a checklist of text features in informational texts, such as a glossary, table of contents, or diagrams. Each item in English is translated into Spanish in smaller text beneath.
I use this tool first as a demonstration, showing how to find different text features as well as the main idea and details. Then, I give it to students and use it to scaffold their learning--they can work on books in groups first, and then individually. I also use this tool to assess older students' familiarity with informational text and the academic vocabulary associated with it--if they can fill out all or part of it without prior instruction, then I know what I don't need to teach!
