Instruction: I use the gradual release model of instruction. In my classroom, we use these graphic organizers for teacher modeling, student practice, and as a formative assessment during a reading unit. I would begin a unit with using teacher think-alouds and modeling filling in the graphic organizer to help me understand the text better. Later we would fill one in together and the students would have an opportunity to complete it with a partner or small group. As an assessment tool, I would give students a grade-level passage and have them complete the organizer independently.
Assessment: For each graphic organizer, I also created a scoring rubric. We use these as a grade level to make sure we are giving equitable scores. At the end of the file you will also find two blank rubrics you can use to create your own scoring guide. These rubrics include a spot for self assessment as well.
