This nonfiction reading passage is about the parts of a gumball machine. I am measuring the reading level at third grade, second semester. This is based on my own judgement as well as readability tests.
I am providing 3 formats of the reading passage. One format is a single black-line page with one illustration of a gumball machine. The other two formats include real photos. One set has color photos and the other set has the photos in grey-scale. The photographic formats have less text on the page and therefore, the entire passage takes 3 pages.
There is a multiple choice quiz with an answer key. There is also a gumball parts labeling activity. The labeling activity includes 2 formats. The first format allows the children to write the parts of the gumball machine on the diagram. They can also use the word labels and glue them to the appropriate location. The second format is free-form. The children draw and label the gumball machine themselves. The free-form sheet could also serve as a "pre-test" prior to using the reading the passage.
There is an acrostic poem about using a gumball machine. This includes 1 black-line and several color versions. There is also a page for the students to create their own acrostic poem about gumballs or a gumball machine.
Many children have had experience with using a gumball machine making this a high interest, nonfiction reading passage.
