This one-page handout is a great accompaniment to any nonfiction text. Students simply read the text and answer the questions either on their own or as a group. This document includes twelve questions that require students to annotate or color-code the text to find answers. This is a no-prep activity that you can reuse again and again with any nonfiction story. You can easily adapt or modify this assignment by only assigning the questions that pertain to vocabulary, comprehension, or the skill you are currently focusing on. Depending on the age group, and how familiar your students are with annotating, I would recommend practicing each question together as a class before using this for independent practice.
Questions cover topics including:
• MAIN IDEA & SUMMARY
• VOCABULARY WITH CONTEXT CLUES
• NONFICTION GENRES
• AUTHOR’S PURPOSE
• TEXT FEATURES
• TEXT STRUCTURE (PATTERN OF ORGANIZATION)
• FACT AND OPINIONS and more!
