This chart helps our students understand the different structures of informational texts. Understanding structure helps the students better take on the challenging task of reading and comprehending informational texts. The tricky part about informational texts is often students don't have context in which to place the new vocabulary or information they are reading about. This chart helps students navigate informational texts by giving them a map on how the text will go. Mini-lessons can teach the students to anticipate the writing moves an author makes with informational texts and this chart can help to reinforce and remind students about those structures.
This year, we used the chart to help the students to write their own informational texts. Students used the chart to pick which structure would best serve the information they wanted to present. And then used the chart to guide their own writing.
