    Description

When you need enrichment for early finishers or emergency lesson plans, use standards based lessons that build critical thinking and scientific literacy skills without taking your curriculum off the rails.

Each of these 8 lesson plans are designed to take 1 day to complete and are intended for grades 5-8. They are independent of curriculum but still address NGSS skills. Each lesson contains a 2 page informational text reading and a 1 or 2 page worksheet with analysis questions probing higher order thinking skills.

    • Lesson 1 - The bioethics of placebos. Learn what a placebo is and how they are used in controlled experiments. Then, read scenarios and decide if the physician in the scenario was acting ethically when s/he prescribed a placebo.
    • Lesson 2 - Astrology vs. Astronomy. Learn the 3 things astrologers got wrong. Think critically about the position of the sun and how it impacts your personality.
    • Lesson 3 - Compost. Learn the basics of decomposition and how to start a compost pile.
    • Lesson 4 - Vaccines. What are the types of vaccines and how do they work?
    • Lesson 5 - Vampire Bats. How do the only flying mammal find their prey?
    • Lesson 6 - Birth Order. Does being first born, a middle child, or the youngest child affect IQ or personality?
    • Lesson 7 - Spiders. How do spiders spin webs? What benefits does spider venom have for people?
    • Lesson 8 - Bees. What is colony collapse disorder and how can you help?
