This graphic organizer provides students with a lasting visual memory for the components of good informational/expository writing.
The visual is based on the following components of informational writing:
Introduction (Hook, Main Idea, List/Thesis Sentence)
Subtopic 1 (Facts and Examples)
Subtopic 2 (Facts and Examples)
Subtopic 3 (Facts and Examples)
Conclusion (Conclusion, Reminder, Extra Thoughts)
While I couldn't create a true acronym, I use "ISSSC" to represent "Ice Scoop Scoop Scoop Cream."
This 2-page set includes a planning guide for an informational writing piece and a small poster to display.
I have used this with my 3rd grade students. I start with this guide and eventually wean them off of it. This visual remains in their mind and guides them later on our end-of-the-year tests. While this plan is meant to form a 5-paragraph essay, it can be easily adapted for 1-paragraph and 3-paragraph pieces.
I hope your students find this useful!
