This pack is the perfect product to help students prepare for Smarter Balanced and state assessments while also hitting Next Generation Science Standards for 3rd Grade. While this is a 3rd Grade NGSS topic, all students from 3rd-5th grade can use this product to review climate zones (or perhaps learn it for the first time) while strengthening their writing skills. This product supports students in integrating their learning from multiple sources to write a well-developed informative/explanatory essay!

The students are taken step-by-step through the process. They begin with reading five sources on a common topic. The pages have space in the margins to write notes about their thoughts. Then, they answer constructed response questions to check for understanding. Finally, a set of graphic organizers walk them through setting up a strong informational/explanatory essay. Lined paper is included for them to publish their essays on!

This resource meets multiple CCSS as well as NGSS! Some standards addressed are:

This set includes:

  • 10 day lesson plans (this is the minimum and this will probably take more than 10 days if taught thoroughly)
  • Cover page for packet
  • "I Can" posters with animal graphics from different climate zones
  • 5 different articles to read with students
  • Constructed response
  • BLT writing graphic organizer
  • BLT writing anchor chart for teacher use and for students to glue into their notebooks
  • Graphic organizer without BLT chart
  • Vocabulary Chart
  • Maps to color in as they learn about each climate zone
  • Teacher map anchor chart
  • Color and black and white themed publishing paper

This pack contains everything you need to develop critical thinking and create strong writers!
