This 4 week unit will help you teach your first grade students to write informational / nonfiction books!

The lessons teach students students how to write nonfiction books about familiar topics. Then, you will lead a simple class research project to show students how writers use nonfiction books to get ideas for their own writing.

This unit is designed to be taught toward the middle or end of the year.

In this unit, students will learn how to:

- Plan and write nonfiction books with true information

- Include specific vocabulary words in their writing

- Organize the information in their books using a table of contents, headings, and page numbers

- Create detailed drawings that teach the readers of their books

- Write strong introductions and conclusions

- Use transition words in their writing

- Do very simple research to find more information for their books

- Revise and edit their work independently and with a partner

This unit includes:

- 22 detailed minilessons that will last a little over 4 weeks

- Daily language arts/grammar exercises that complement the minilessons

- Clear unit goals, daily objectives, and Common Core alignment
