Description

Informational (nonfiction) writing lessons, writing rubrics, printable writing paper, posters and visuals, graphic organizers for planning, and more - for second grade students!

------

This 5 week unit will help you teach your second grade students to write nonfiction books! Students will also participate in a simple research project at the end of the unit.

The unit begins by having students write nonfiction books on topics of their choice. Later, students write nonfiction books about habitats.

These lessons are designed to be taught toward the beginning or middle of the year but can be used anytime you want to teach students how to write informational books.

In this unit, students will learn how to:

- Plan and write nonfiction books with true information

- Include examples, definitions, and comparisons in their books

- Organize the information in their books using a table of contents, headings, and page numbers

- Create detailed drawings that teach the readers of their books

- Write strong introductions and conclusions

- Use transition words in their writing

- Include adjectives and adverbs in their writing

- Do very simple research to find more information for their books

- Use a dictionary to spell words

- Combine sentences

- Use contractions and possessives

- Revise and edit their work independently and with a partner

This unit includes:

- 24 detailed minilessons that will last about 5 weeks

- Daily language arts/grammar exercises that complement the minilessons

- Clear unit goals, daily objectives, and Common Core alignment

- Posters, visual aids, and materials to go with the minilessons (all color materials also have black and white versions included)
