Etch-a-Sketch is a Gifted Strategy that is effective for all students to use. As the teacher reads non-fiction text about penguins to students she/he would stop along the way and provide students with the opportunity to jot down the facts they are hearing and draw sketches that support their thinking. Or, as students independently
read text about penguins they would stop reading and jot down facts with sketches to remember the ideas that they found interesting about penguins. They would then be able to refer to this page to write an informational text about penguins.
The Penguin Mind Map is a Gifted Strategy for recording ideas that are being presented or to record the ideas going on inside the brain about penguins. This map can be used to support the informational text.
Wagon Wheel is a Gifted Strategy that is engaging for all students to use. Students take a moment and write down the penguin fact that they love the most. Then they go from peer to peer collecting their peer’s favorite facts on the remaining spaces on the wheel. No facts may be used twice so if someone restates the same fact
they must come up with another fact to record on the paper. Students move from peer to peer until the wheel is done. Then they use their collection of facts and other sources of information to complete their informational penguin writing.
The ABC Penguin Facts Collector Page is a fun way to rearrange and organize the spider facts before starting to use them in the informational text.
The penguin fact cards are a way to help support students and differentiate the task. There are several fact cards that are done that students who are not ready to take notes can organize into an informational text to see how to construct an informational text. There is a blank set that can be copied and completed by the
class together or by students independently. Again these cards could be used as a support to help students work on organizing an informational text.
The Independent Informational Penguin Writing Paper, the Writing Paper with Picture Boxes, and the Penguin Informational Writing Booklet are different options for the writers to choose from for their writing piece.
I hope your students love learning about penguins.
I hope these activities help them produce an outstanding informational writing piece!
