The purpose for this unit is to integrate Social Studies standards while teaching Informational Writing.
This unit focuses on using the second grade Georgia Historical Figure, Martin Luther King Jr. as a model for writing a four paragraph essay. Martin Luther King Jr. was purposefully chosen as a model because he is a familiar figure. Students can either be assigned or select a third grade Georgia Historical Figure to write an informational text.
This unit covers EVERY informational writing standard EXCEPT for the standard CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.3.6 of using technology to produce and publish writing. This would be a simple adaptation for teachers to make in the classroom. I purposely excluded this standard because I did not want to make any assumptions about the teacher’s available technological resources.
This unit includes:
-Twenty-three days of explicit lesson plans for modeling and scaffolding informational writing. All lessons include an Essential Question, hook, teaching point, and summary.
-Printable I Can Statements for every lesson
-6 posters for instruction
-All the printable materials needed for instruction
-A student friendly assessment rubric and an assessment rubric for teachers to grade the final product
-An editing checklist
-A list of suggested books for student research
-A mini book for each Georgia Historical figure EXCEPT for Lyndon B. Johnson and Caser Chavez for students to use for research.
-Final draft paper for each figure
Please note the teacher will have to provide some text for the writing lessons. The books needed are;
