PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

*Informational paragraph writing unit* You have to learn to crawl before you can walk. Similarly, students need to learn how to write a well-constructed informational paragraph before they can start composing multi-paragraph reports and essays. This unit will help you teach your students how to write an informational paragraph with a clearly stated topic sentence, text-based supporting details, a conclusion, and domain-specific vocabulary.

The skill of writing a well-constructed informational paragraph will lay the foundation of all the learning. Moreover, most high-stake tests expect students to be able to compose an informational essay in response to an article. Therefore, it is important that you teach informational paragraph writing at the beginning of the school year. I always start off my writer's workshop with this unit.

This unit consists of:
1. very detailed lesson plans that show you how to guide students through the writing process (prewriting, composing, revising, editing, publishing) when writing an informational piece
2. multiple worksheets with carefully designed, meaningful activities (NO FLUFF)
3. graphic organizers and writing templates
4. over 30 examples of informational paragraphs
5. grading rubric

I am the queen of integrating several writing skills in one writing unit. After all, if you were to teach all the Common Core writing standards in isolation, you would need two school years instead of one! Therefore, not only does this unit instruct on how to write an evidence-based informational paragraph, but it also teaches students how to:
1. replace dull or general words with vivid words or specialized synonyms (CCSS L.4.4.c)
2. use proper transition words (CCSS W.4.2.c)
3. revise and edit (CCSS W.4.5)
4. find the main idea in an informational paragraph

The provided time frame for teaching this unit (1 week) is tentative and depends on the level your students are at. This year I spent almost two weeks teaching this unit.
