The purpose of this unit is to introduce ESL students in levels 1 to 3 to Informative/Expository writing. We use the Writer’s Workshop model to develop these writing skills. Students will have mini lessons with appropriate modifications per level of English proficiency, writing time, sharing time, and they will be asked to publish and share one final product. We will also devote time to improve their overall grammar and conventions of Standard English.
Note: This product has 3 folders. The teacher folder has the lesson plans for the unit. Please, CLICK on VIEW and then check the NAVIGATION PANE to see on the left hand side each day of lesson plan. You can click right there to go directly to each day as well as to see the different titles: essential questions, standards, lesson per day.
This product is a whole unit which has about 20 days of lesson plans. It's fully customizable since you can edit lessons to fit your needs. Standards (WIDA and Common Core) are meant for ESL students in high school, however, due to the levels in ESL, this unit can be used for middle school. You will need to adjust the standards to middle school, though.
Other than that, students follow the Writer's Workshop model and are able to write at their own pace. You will need to have regular conferences with groups of students and individual students are needed.
Grammar handouts as well as Power Point presentations are provided.
