WHEN THE BOUGH BROKE: CREATING AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF EARLY YEARS
Let students have some writing fun with an autobiography.

This informative writing activity combines interview skills and writing skills—but with a twist. Instead of examining another person’s life, students INVESTIGATE THEIR OWN LIVES—THEIR EARLY LIVES.

They discover details of themselves when they were young (or even before they were born) by interviewing relatives and family friends.

Using the information they gather, they then WRITE AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY of their early years.

This 5-page reproducible activity includes over 50 questions/prompts students can use with family members or friends, along with questions to jar students’ own memories of when they were very young.

Included is a section of questions for students who were adopted or are in foster care.

After they have completed their interviews, students then create an autobiography of their early years.

Included in the packet is a reproducible cover sheet for these student autobiographies.

This classroom-tested activity has been used successfully in middle school and high school classes. Created by Susan Thurman.
