The contents of this package provides teachers with everything needed to model the research process, model informative writing, assess informative writing, and provide a measurement extension activity. The differentiated resources accommodate the needs of students at various grade levels.
Use the presentation PowerPoint and a graphic organizer to think-aloud and demonstrate the steps of conducting research. A completed graphic organizer is included to help guide your think-aloud during the research portion of the presentation. Grade-level specific rubrics provide students with the criteria their informative writing will be evaluated upon and grade-level specific think-aloud exemplars enable teachers to model informative writing that is aligned to the rubric criteria.
The project concludes with an optional “actual size” measurement activity. The measurement cards contain animal silhouettes with each animal’s average length rounded to the nearest whole inch, foot, centimeter, and meter. The measuring activity can easily be adapted to fit a desired non-standard measurement tool.
Once the research project has been introduced, students can be instructed to work independently, collaboratively, or with guidance from an adult based on their respective ability and maturity levels. The project can be completed as a whole group activity or as a writing center activity. Best of all, the students can repeatedly use the resources to conduct research on other ocean animals that interest them, and you can repeatedly use the resources regardless of which grade you are assigned to teach in the future.
A roll of black butcher block paper if not available at your school, rulers and yard/meter sticks, a USB flash drive to transfer the student research PowerPoint and Word templates to student computers
