Students will select a famous monument from a detailed list. Examples include the Statue of Liberty, White House, Sydney Opera House, etc. They will find out pertinent details such as why the monument was built, when it was built, what materials were used in its construction, etc. Additionally, they will learn to use good transition words and phrases so their writing flows nicely. They will also use content-specific vocabulary that relates to their topic. In addition, students will learn to give credit to the sources (textbooks, websites, encyclopedias) where they borrowed the information. You have the option in this lesson of having your students use a direct quote/citation or just to have them paraphrase their research.
