Product Description
Initial blends, digraphs, & trigraphs Picture Cards
This product came to be because I needed picture cards to use with my small group reading and word work activities. I really didn’t care for the commercial products and the pictures they used so knowing that I could find cute clip art on Tpt, I developed my own.
This product contains clip art images for beginning consonant clusters and digraphs. I use this with kids who need to hear the sound. One activity I do is picture sorts. I use two different clusters that produce contrasting sounds so that kids can hear the difference and also see the difference in how their mouth forms the sound. I use a little handheld mirrors so that when kids make the sounds they can see how their mouth looks. I usually use a white board and I make a t-chart, starting with a field of two clusters. I distribute picture cards to the small group, as I do I name the picture, slowly stretching out and emphasizing the consonant cluster or digraph i.e. “ship sh sh i-p” ship. Once I have distributed the pictures for both letter clusters I am targeting, I show the t-chart, name the letter and sound. I ask each child to take one picture from their pile to match it with the cluster or digraph. They must name the picture, say the sound, and add it to the t-chart. I usually start with 4-5 pictures of each letter per child. As the follow-up, they can use the black and white set, cut them out and then glue them to a t-chart.
For more of a challenge, I use three letters and the matching picture cards.
Included are the following:
blends-bl, br, cl, cr, dr, fl, fr, gl, gr, pl, pr, sc, sk, sl, sm, sn, st, tr,
digraphs-ch, sh, th, wh
trigraphs-scr, shr, spl, spr, squ, str, thr,
Two sets; color and black and white; sets of beginning consonant clusters, digraphs, and trigraphs
To store I recommend a 3 x 5 file box with plain dividers that you can write on and label. You can get colored or plain on Amazon. I would print the color copy on card stock, laminate, cut. The black line copy I would three ring hole punch and put in a binder.
