lnnovation Stations Unit

Innovation Stations are 21st Century Learning Centers that can be implemented in any K-3 classroom. The main student learning outcomes revolve around building 21st-century skills such as character, collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and creativity. Through HIGHLY ENGAGING and MOTIVATING challenges, students embark of tasks that require them to first DISCOVER, then CREATE, and later INNOVATE.

Innovation Stations: 21st Century Learning Centers are just that, centers. This package contains 10 stations (centers) that related 5 learning strands: art, building, coding, engineering, and filmmaking, x2 stations per strand. Depending on class size, teachers can set up all 10 stations. The Discover, Create, and Innovate task cards at each station would easily fill at 45min session. For a student to visit all 10 stations, at least 10x45 min would be required. Alternatively, teachers can set up 5 stations, 1 station per strand, for a class size of 20-25 students, or opt to implement 1 or 2 Innovation Stations into an already developed center time in your schedule. How often and how many Innovation Stations a teacher uses at a time is completely flexible.

The critical component of Innovation Stations is the Task Card associated with each station. Students engage in 3 levels of thinking, working, and learning while at a station, (Discover, Create, and Innovate) with innovate being the highest level. Students would always begin with ‘Discover’, exploring the materials at the station and replicating a demonstration product. ‘Create’, take the discover knowledge or product and improve it. Finally, working their way through the tasks on the card until they have ‘innovated’ at the station, students apply their learning in order to design their own product. Yes - Kindergarten can do these steps! This process may happen in one 45min session or take multiple sessions. Supplied with this product is a ‘Station Tracker’ - a way to record a students' progress through the stations. Students should be encouraged to independently track their learning and application of 21st-century skills during Innovation Stations. They can simply note down the station, strand, date, level of learning, and use an 'emoticon' reflection.

Please also take note of the inventory overview that is included. Here, teachers can find a list of all the materials needed for each station. The materials are NOT provided. Teachers must collect these resources themselves. (Almost all resources are easily collectable - plastic cups, sewing needles, lego block and other blocks.) Three stations do require access to an iPad. E.g. If you have 4 students at one of these stations, two iPads would be needed.
Teachers would need to organize all of the materials, printouts, and additional resources needed for each station in a self-contained bin. THE RESOURCES REQUIRED TO BE COLLECTED IN ADVANCE BY THE TEACHER ARE DISPLAYED IN THE PREVIEW OF THIS PRODUCT DESCRIPTION. Setting up the Stations in the tubs, laminating task cards at the beginning of the year can take up to 2hrs, but once they are set up, it is simply a matter of pulling the tubs out.

Innovation Stations: 21st Century Learning Centers are a hands-on, engaging approach to learning which provides students with innovative student-centered opportunities allowing them to apply key 21st-century skills such as character, collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and creativity in order to improve their learning outcomes.
