d) teaching students the specific thinking and inquiry skills to be able to drive their own learning for social studies knowledge acquisition...

e) teaching the skills and mindset of 'solution mindedness'...

The inquiry model presented in this download carefully draws out the innate curiosity of each student, through careful observation of the image, inference, question formation, and question selection; finally leading the class to narrowing down all the questions to one burning question to research further, before brainstorming a solution to an important REAL WORLD PROBLEM !

Students are engaging with and practicing skills that allow them to draw out their prior knowledge, apply their curiosity, and learn how to build knowledge through question formation and research.

The THREE final steps in this inquiry model are where the magic happens!

First, students will design a 'superhero' that will have the ability to solve the problem that has been thought about and talked about.

Then, students will have a chance to think of a solution that would tackle the problem (if a superhero was not available!), in the real world.

Finally, students will write a short story, with there superhero as the main character, that involves the superhero solving the real world problem (the hero in action).
