Who: This inquiry-based reading lesson plan is effective for all grade levels

and all levels of readers.

What: Good readers ask themselves questions as they read, using the text

and their own ideas to answer those questions as well as questions from

others. One way to encourage students to ask and answer questions about

a text is to “think aloud,” modeling the kinds of questions readers ask

themselves and where to find the answers.

Where: This lesson plan can be used in language arts, science, social

studies, or any subject. The lesson plan can be easily modified for fiction or

nonfiction texts.

When: This lesson plan is geared towards whole group instruction as a

model for how to implement a strategy for inquiry-based reading. It can be

used at any point during the school year.

Why: The activity presented in the lesson plan (“5 Ws and an H”) is a good

framework for getting students to think about the types of questions to ask

while reading.
