In this inquiry lab, students will investigate the density of both regular and irregular objects. Students can bring in their own small object or toy to make it more engaging or the teacher can provide one. You will also need a regular object such as a density cube for each group. Students then make predictions about which objects will sink or float. You may also want to have these pictures up on the front of the room to refer back to at the end of the lab. After finding out the density of water (it is told to them, but you could do a lab in between to have then calculate this), they have the opportunity to change their prediction if they want. Finally, you test the objects and have students reflect on their responses.
