An entire unit of work. This unit uses the principles of inquiry learning where students have a level of choice and control over their learning. Duration around 2 - 3 weeks of work, depending on class ability.
The unit has been written using Blooms Taxonomy as a scaffold.
Classy, ready to go worksheets - no need to filter through all the teacher jargon. Just print and teach!
All cards should be laminated so that they can be used over and over.
I have used this method of teaching over and over again with my classes and students love it.
Attachment 1. 'Unpolished Gem' Inquiry Unit Rubric Card
Use this card like a 'menu' - students can select different tasks they would like to complete over a nominated period of time, 2 weeks for example. The cards are all attached.
Teachers can use this system any way they want - either teach the cards to the class as a whole; allow students to choose which cards they would like to study; signpost some compulsory cards students must attempt, or use them as an extension task for more able students within the class.
I have used them the following way:
Students work independently and choose which cards they would like to complete (one at a time). I set the class a minimum of 6 cards per student to have completed by two weeks' time.
The cards are ranked in level of difficulty according to Blooms - from Knowledge through to Evaluation.
For my higher band students I set a minimum of two to three analysis and above cards which they must complete as part of their 6 cards.
I set the laminated cards at the front of the classroom at the start of each lesson and students can come up and select the card they would like to work from.
Each student gets a copy of the Inquiry Unit Rubric which they stick into their book and use as their 'menu'.
For each student I keep a record in my markbook as to which cards they have completed (and I have marked) and the level of difficulty.
This unit works really well as the class feel they have a level of control and choice into what aspects of the novel they can learn about, depending on their areas of interest.
