This is 3rd in a progressive series of labs on using the microscope by pAllen Science. It is an introductory microscope wet mount lab designed for grades 7-9. Allows students to make wet mounts of insect parts, observe how microscope affects image, use the microscope to observe insect adaptations, then use higher order thinking skills to infer advantages and compare to human adaptations. Includes lab instructions, write up for students, analysis, summary and reflection questions, and rubric to guide students. Intended for pairs. Includes note to teacher. Suitable for Life Science or Biology.
Suggestion: a week before doing lab, teacher and students can start collecting dead insects. Easy to find in window sills, garages and light fixtures. I keep a small plastic container in my garage and collect them throughout the summer. This is a fall lab in my curriculum. Questions build a foundation for topics covered later in the year.
