The Insects Inquiry Project is a great way to support students as they begin learning about the inquiry process or as a way to practice using inquiry. Use this five step process during an insect unit in your classroom!

Included in this package:

Inquiry Poster
A poster that defines inquiry for the purpose of this project is included in this package of materials. The poster is included in both colour and black/white. Review the different bullet points with the students and hang the poster somewhere in your classroom as a reference. Print the poster on 11X17 paper to make it easier for students to read.

Bulletin Board Headings
Create your own bulletin board heading or use one of the two bulletin board headings that are included in this package of materials. One heading is “I Wonder …” and the other heading is “Insect Inquiry Questions.” Print one or both headings on 11X17 paper and hang them on a bulletin board or wall. Throughout your unit on insects, encourage students to come up with different questions they wonder about and post under the heading. Headings are provided in both colour and black/white.

Step-by-Step Inquiry Posters
A set of posters is included for each of the five inquiry steps outlined in this project. The five steps are:
Step 1: Pose a Question
Step 2: Conduct Research
Step 3: Interpret Information
Step 4: Share Learning
Step 5: Assess Inquiry Process

Step 5 is optional. It is provided for teachers that want students to reflect on the inquiry process.

Question Cards
There are nine inquiry question cards included in this package of materials. Show one, two, or all nine of these questions to your students. These questions are meant to help get students come up with their own questions. The included questions are not meant to be the only questions you use with your students for their inquiry projects. You want students to come up with questions on their own that are meaningful to them. Post some or all of these questions on your bulletin board. Add new student questions by using the blank templates provided. Questions and templates are provided in both colour and black/white.

Research Template
Students can collect research information on blank pieces of paper, in a notebook, or on the research template included in this package of materials. Determine the number of sources you want students to consult before sharing their information with the rest of the class. If using the research templates, give students one template for each source of information they use. If you want students to consult three sources, give them three templates. Templates are provided with primary lines and with regular lines. Use the template that best meets the learning needs of your students.

Presentation Ideas Poster
There are many different ways that students can share their information with the rest of the class. The enclosed poster lists over 25 ideas. Students can also come up with their own presentation idea. Print the poster on 11X17 paper if you are going to hang it in your classroom. The poster is provided in colour and black/white.

Self-Assessment (Optional)
If you choose to complete step 5 of this project, a self-assessment template is included so students can reflect on the process they went through to come up with the answers to their inquiry questions. Students complete the self-assessment and then you can discuss their answers individual or as a group.

Class Book (Optional)
You can also create a class book with the inquiry questions and answers the students discovered. Two different templates are included. Both templates have room for students to write their questions and their answers. One of the templates has room for an illustration as well. A class book is a great way to showcase the work of all the students. Place the class book in your classroom library so students can read the book in their spare time.
