PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Provide options to your students as they learn insect-related vocabulary. The “Insect Interactive Vocabulary Notebook: Tiered Template Options” package contains a number of different templates for you to use to support student development of insect vocabulary.

Immediately following the teachers notes are three examples of options you may choose to use with your students. Option one supports students who struggle with written language. Very little writing is required of students with this option. Option two involves students using their insect vocabulary knowledge to complete the different sections of their interactive notebook page. You may choose to compose a sentence about the vocabulary word with the students or have them create sentences individually. Finally, option three requires students to apply their knowledge of the target vocabulary word to write and illustrate two sentences. Use the different templates to create other notebook pages that target the unique needs of the students in your class.

Vocabulary Words

Vocabulary words and definitions that are a part of this resource include: abdomen, ant, antennae, aphids, bumblebee, butterfly, caterpillar, chrysalis, colony, dragonfly, drones, grasshopper, hatching, hibernate, house fly, hover, ladybird, ladybug, larva, mandibles, metamorphosis, mosquito, nectar, nest, nymph, pest, poisonous, pollen, pollination, pollinate, prey, pupa, sting, stinger, swarm, and thorax.

Page Headers

Use the enclosed page headers on the top of each vocabulary page. Students can color in the letters if they would like to personalize their page. If you prefer not to use the page headers, have students print the vocabulary word at the top of the page.

Build a Word Pockets

There are a number of different options for using the “Build A Word” pockets on the interactive vocabulary pages. Refer to “Option One” for a visual. Students can cut out the individual letters of the target vocabulary word and place the letters in the pocket. Periodically, throughout the unit, students can pull out the letters and practice spelling the vocabulary word. Another option is to use a word frame. Students can cut out the individual letters of the word and place them on the word frame. Word frames are provided for different lengths of words. The word frame can be folded and stored in the “Build A Word” pocket as well. At some point, you may want students to glue the letters onto the word frame and fold and store the completed frame in the pocket.

Illustration Templates

These templates can be used by students to illustrate their vocabulary words. Students can either draw on the front of the template or lift the tab and draw underneath.

Definition Templates

Similar to illustration templates, students write the definition on or under the tab of the template. Definitions for all the vocabulary words are included for students who have difficulty with written language.

Part of Speech, Descriptive Word, Synonym and Antonym Templates

A number of templates are included for students to use to record the part of speech, a descriptive word, a synonym and/or an antonym for the target vocabulary word. Use the template(s) that best address the vocabulary word you are targeting and the learning needs of your students.

My Sentences Templates

Students can compose sentences about their target vocabulary word as a class or individually. A number of different templates are included for this purpose. Some students may focus on one sentence while you may challenge other students to compose two sentences and encourage them to include information they have learned.
