Description

The insects/Bugs Literacy and Math theme has been created to assist you in meeting your common core curriculum outcomes.

Two emergent readers are used for shared and guided reading. The readers are used to teach beginning reading skills, the lifecycle of a butterfly and how bugs/insects are alike. The emergent reader “The Very Hungry Caterpillar Retelling” is basically a retelling of the literature selection.

Literacy Centers

-Students will cut and paste pictures in sequential order in regards to the lifecycle of a butterfly using the reader to assist them.

-Students will draw alphabet picture butterfly cards and print these on a dotted printing sheet

-Bug alphabet cards where the students put these in the correct order to form a long

-Students will draw a consonant letter card to complete the focus word family “at” and “ug” to form words. They will determine if the word is real or pretend.

-Students will find 40 CVC picture cards and words matching these pictures.

-“Sight Word Game” in this game the focus sight words would be printed on the game board. Playing partners would take turns rolling and die and printing the focus sight word on the worksheet provided that represent the number rolled.

Writing

Included is a shape butterfly-writing template where students can write about facts that they have learned about bugs/insects.

Science

- After reading emergent reader “How Are Bugs Alike?”, the students can sort cards according to if they are insect or not an insect. There are 42 picture cards.

Math

The focus in this theme is on the outcomes outlined below related to the Common Core Standards Outcomes.

-I can tell if a group has greater than, less than or an equal amount. K.CC.B.6.

-I can compare two printed numerals between 1-10. K.CC.B.7

-I can write numbers 0-20 and show the correct amount of objects for these numbers.
K.CC.A.3

-I can count 20 things. K.CC.B.5

-I can add and subtract in different ways. K.0A.A.1

-I can solve addition and subtraction problems up to 10. K.0A.A.2

-I can show sums in different ways. K.0A.A.3

-I can add and subtract up to 10 (using drawings, fingers or manipulatives). K.0A.A.4

-I can name shapes no matter which way they are turned. K.G.A.2

-I know some shapes are 2-D and 3-D. K.G.A.3

This theme is meant to be used for a two week time period and is based on a balanced literacy philosophy.
