In this common core aligned unit, students will read literature with Eric Carle texts such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Very Clumsy Click Beetle, The Very Quiet Cricket and The Very Lonely Firefly. They will use graphic organizers to record details from text with a focus on characters, setting, and order of events. Students will love The Very Hungry Caterpillar craftivity. You will love the ease of printable products and classroom displays.
Students will also compare narrative and informational texts. They will look for main ideas and details in informational texts and record them on the graphic organizers provided. Students will learn strategies for close reading of informational text in this thematic unit as well.
There is a link to writing in this unit. As the students gain knowledge from the mentor texts, they will be composing their own narrative and informational texts. There are scoring guides included. These are aligned to the common core state standards which makes standards based grading simple for you! The unit will culminate with a celebration of writing as students plan and create a bug party. This is a great spring unit to review all that was learned at the end of school. However, it can be enjoyed any time of year.
