This is a great tool to use to assess students' true understanding of solving expressions using order of operations (PEMDAS or GEMDAS). In this practice, students are given an expression and are required to insert parentheses to make the expression true. After making that determination (using their knowledge of order of operations), they are asked to justify their answering using words or numbers. This practice only contains 1 problem, since it is meant to be used as a "try it" or an exit ticket. When students finish it, there is a challenge problem at the bottom, asking them to create their own expression using parentheses AND brackets that equals a certain number.
