Break Cards: (comes in 2 different sizes)
This is a great resource for all those who have a student that sometimes needs a little more support in the classroom. These are 3 visual, color coded break cards to support students that sometimes need assistance requesting a break when they start to feel upset.
The first card is a yellow card (JOY) that states "I am feeling good!" This student can have this card out when they feel good and do not feel that they need a break.
The next card is a blue card (SADNESS) that states "I am starting to feel sad! I might need a break soon." The student can switch to this card when they feel they are starting to feel upset and might need a break. This is a way of warning their peers and adults in the classroom that their feelings have changed and to check in with them.
The last card is a red card (ANGER) that states "I feel mad! I need a break." The student can switch to this card to let adults and peers know that they are not in a good place and they need to take a break.
I often use these cards with my students who are easily upset and have trouble sharing their feelings independently.
Simply print out the cards and laminate them (so you don't need to print new ones out every 2 weeks). I also punched a hole in the corner of all the cards and put them on a ring for easy access.
