My Instagram Story project is something I used to open the school year. In short, the project asks kids to reflect on important events in their lives or in the world, write about them through a narrative lens, and then reduce their written responses to flash fiction (25 words or less) Instagram captions that accompany thematically related photographs.
The project was a fun way to get to know my students and assess their abstract thinking. Since flash fiction was the genre for writing and Instagram the medium for sharing their work, my students were both curious and engaged as we connected writing, social media, and current events.
I used supplemental materials and activities to get the kids ready for this process, including slides that reviewed the elements of storytelling and guided writing activities that helped the kids understand writing reduction. At the end of the project, we shared and viewed their stories on our class Instagram account.
