Data is the vehicle that drives reflection, adjustments, and improvements. I like to think of data as a necessary yearly physical. Each year, both men and women are encouraged to visit a physician for a thorough diagnostic check-up. The prognosis determines whether or not someone will see the doctor next year or next week. Many people choose not to get checked because of fear of the unknown. Consequently, many ailments escalate into untreatable maladies due to non-early detection. The failure to frequently and consistently analyze formative/summative data is no different. As educators, we should thoroughly analyze and reflect upon our student’s data to make the necessary adjustments that will help ALL students demonstrate mastery of a standard. Having said that, this tool is to be used as an Instructional Check-Up. The categorization of each standard will depend on the percent of students choosing the correct answer for a specific standard. You may analyze the data by teacher or grade level. A description of possible causes and treatments are given for each category. I have provided a sample of a finished tool within the document. Happy data!
