I use this clip chart as an assessment tracker. I give students the hand assessment to see their understanding of decomposing numbers. This is their instructional number. During the week this will be a main number for them to focus on. Once they have mastered the number they are clipped at, they can ask to be given the assessment (we play a game with buttons or red and white bean counters) or I will give it to them when I think they may be ready to move up. When the previous instructional number is mastered they move their clip up to the next number and begin to see the ways that number can be composed and decomposed.
