PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This activity is appropriate for 1st grade, but could be used with 2nd grade as review of instrument names and rhythms consisting of barred eighths and/or quarter notes. The relay game could be modified and used with younger or older students.

In this relay game, students identify instruments presented in the slide show. Then, they decode the rhythm of the instrument's name. They "relay" this rhythm by clapping/patting the rhythm with the next person in line. This continues until they reach the end, in which teams gain one instrument card for each relay they complete correctly.

Upon completion, students will be able to identify several classroom percussion instruments (listed below), decode quarter and barred eighth notes, and practice steady beat. Students are also asked to compose an ostinato using the instruments they've identified.

Students will identify the following instruments:
-guiro
-frog guiro
-egg shakers
-tambour drum
-bongo drums
-cowbell
-claves
-bells
-woodblock
-djembe

Printable instrument and rhythm cards (for composing the ostinato) are included.
