As a math specialist in our middle school, I was often invited to teach "the tough lessons" in many classrooms. I love the challenge of using multiple learning styles to teach one concept. This lesson was a favourite, reaching many students who initially swore that integer addition was illogical and "impossible."
Addition of Integers with Soccer Teams is a video that connects with your students to deliver a unique grade 7 lesson or a creative senior review. The students see an essential math skill through new eyes: the everyday experience of youth soccer teams explains the logic of integer addition.
This resource contains a 12 minute video and 2 pages of guided student notes.
The video is presented with a multi-level class in mind. The video is narrated but can easily become a silent or teacher-voiced presentation by removing the sound. The lesson, examples, and sample questions are accessible to every level of learner through the student notes and guided narration:
Level 1: Incomplete knowledge (aid or teacher assistance required)
Level 2: Capable of simple examples
Level 3: Confident enough to try all the material covered in the video.
Level 4: Experienced and ready to try a challenge.
After the lesson and sample questions, students are encouraged to self-judge their abilities on this topic. This allows teachers to provide differentiated assignments following the lesson.
[A package of puzzle based, differentiated, integer addition assignments are available on my TPT site. They come complete with keys, lesson suggestions, and links to videos on the biology based trivia that solves the puzzle: www.teacherspayingteachers.com/store/math-in-my-world]
This resource is best suited to grades 7 - 9, and supports the Grade 7 American Common Core Standards as well as the
Grade 7 Canadian Western Consortium Protocol.
