Product Description
Do your students struggle to understand the complexities of simplifying positive and negative integers when they are faced with math involving the four primary operations? This versatile worksheet can be utilized as practice or an assessment, individually or in small groups.

Phrases on the left have a matching, simplified phrase on the right. In addition to just finding an equivalent phrase, you might also have students simplify the expressions completely. As an extension, have students try to write additional equivalent phrases involving the same numbers but different combinations of operations.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This activity meets standards throughout 5th - 8th grade, and could even be useful for review in Algebra I. It primarily solves common core standards falling under the Number System categories. This one in particular I believe is fully met: CCSS.Math.Content.6.NS.C.5 Understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite directions or values (e.g., temperature above/below zero, elevation above/below sea level, credits/debits, positive/negative electric charge); use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real-world contexts, explaining the meaning of 0 in each situation.
