All students struggle with integers, especially adding and subtracting them. These activities allow them to first focus on the rules of integer calculations and then the math.
Slap Instructions: Place the two signs (pg 2-3) on the board or other central place. Divide the class into two teams. Each team sends a representative to the front and each representative is given a fly swatter or other slapping device. The card (pg 4-7) is read allowed and the first person to decide if the answer will be positive or negative (the actual number is not important at this point) and slap it wins a point for their team. Play continues until you run out of questions or time.
Scoot Instructions: Decide if the cards (pg 4-7) or the students will do the scooting. If it’s the students, place the cards randomly around the room, if the cards then pass them out to the students in any order. Students then do the problem on the card and record their answer in the correct place on their answer sheet (pg 8). After completing the problem they either scoot themselves to a new problem or scoot the card to the next person. Scooting continues until all the problems have been answered. This makes an easy center activity if you just put all the cards in a container and students reach in, take one, record their answer, and put it back.
