This lesson is an intro to operations with integers. Students will understand how to add integers by recognizing opposites and using a number line. By understanding that we are always adding integers and taking out opposites, it eliminates the confusion students get when taught following rules and constantly changing signs. When using a number line, students are able to visualize integer operations when applying these skills in the context of real world problems such as temperature or elevation. Throughout the lesson, I check for understanding by having students show answers on their hands, positive numbers pointed up, negative pointed down. I've included an animated powerpoint, walking through the lesson, to help with understanding.
