Integers Adding and Subtracting
Adding and Subtracting Positive and Negative Integers.
Foldable or Cheat Sheet
After 15 years of teaching math, this is my preferred method of teaching how to add and subtract integers. Most all of my tutoring students do not like the number line approach, so I “don’t even go there”. I like to use 2 different manipulates to represent positive and negative values.
I have included 2 versions (foldable and cheat sheet) which are completely differentiated along with a few of my favorite teaching tips.
I also have included a one page quick guide for an INB (which includes adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing positive and negative integers).
Once they know if the value is positive or negative, the “balancing out” is super easy. I only like to start with the same two values (3 and 5) in every possible combination so that the emphasis is placed on the process and not math facts. I have found this to be a critical part of the complete process. Once they have mastered this process, then I continue with generic worksheets with different values for additional practice.
This method typically takes somewhere between 5-10 minutes for full mastery! My newbie 5th graders and number lined confused 8th graders are shocked how easy it is!
