Description of Powerpoint...
As an anticipatory/introduction to the lesson, the presentation begins by asking the students if they have ever gone scuba diving. It then informs them that if they ever get a chance to go scuba diving then Key Largo is the place they have to visit. The reason why... so that they can see the "Christ of the Abyss", a statue donated by an Italian dive manufacturer that was sunk in 22 feet of water off the coast of Key Largo. After presenting some interesting facts about the statue and the area, the students will experience a real-world connection to the math skill through a scuba-diving reading problem. This connection to the real-world and will help them to better understand the math skill.
Your students are sure to find the anticipatory very colorful and engaging!
The lesson then begins. Steps for adding and subtracting integers are presented through the use of a flow chart. There are 4 guided practice problems for the teacher to walk through with their students step by step (with the use of powerpoint animations). These are followed by 2 skill based problems and 3 reading problems for the students to try. A board activity is included where students can come up in pairs to work out different problems. The powerpoint then closes with 3 Journal Prompts.
