This PowerPoint presentation is on multiplying and dividing integers.
Here is a link to the student notes and worksheets that go along with this PowerPoint: Integers - Multiplying and Dividing (Student Notes and Worksheets)
The presentation is full of great pictures of Nome, Alaska in 1925 and it relates the math skill to the historical diphtheria outbreak in which teams of sled dogs (including Balto and Togo) had to race to get the vaccine to the sick children.
Section 1... of the powerpoint is the anticipatory/introduction to the lesson. In this section, the student is introduced to the lesson with the story of Balto. The story will lead to an example of how the math skill can be used in the real-world. This connection to the real-world not only grabs their attention, but will help them to better understand the math skill. It is also a great way to share a historical event with the students.
Section 2... of the powerpoint is where the lesson begins. It contains two methods that the student can choose between when multiply or divide integers. The first method is just memorizing the rules for determining the sign of their answer. The second method is to count the number of negative signs. If there are an even amount the sign is positive. If there is an odd amount the answer is negative. Steps for both methods are provided with the use of flow charts. Guided practice problems are provided as well as problems that the student can try independently.
Section 3... of the powerpoint is the closure. It is a very short and simple closure followed by some more interesting facts about Balto and Togo.
