This is an absolute favorite among my students! Not only do they enjoy the project but they are learning!!! Definitely a winner :) I've included pictures of a few sample projects from our game day.
Students will use their creative side to design a game that will help them study their math facts with integers.
I believe students learn through doing and active involvement in their education. What better way to promote this learning than to have them create a their own game and play other games?
Students will create a game for at least 2 players. The game will include at least 20 questions (5 from each of the 4 operations). Students need to include instructions, materials, how a player wins, and an answer key for their game.
After the students complete their games, they bring their games in for “game day”. We take 2 days and play some of our classmate’s games. I typically have 3-5 games running at one time and students take turns hosting their game and playing other games.
At the end of game day, I ask students for feedback on the games they’ve played. If they’ve noticed errors or poor game design I take that into consideration when grading. Most games are very creative and very helpful for students to study their facts.
