This is a lesson I use at the beginning of every year with my Algebra students. Many students have difficulty learning to add and subtract integers because they have been taught rules that do not make sense to them. This method teaches students the meaning behind the operations, resulting in a greater long-term understanding. I usually practice the movement activity with the students inside (go out in the hall!), and then take them outside the following day. Every year there are students who have difficulty drawing the number line correctly! This provides me with valuable information about my students early in the year. I have had much success with this lesson and hope you will too!
